Two Cambridge men arrested after drunken brawl in Somerville [Nov. 12th, 2009|07:42 am]
sville_police

Police arrested a man who bragged about beating up other men, and another man who tried to drive home drunk after a bar brawl at Sagra on Nov. 20, according to a police report. Daniel Sheehan, 21, of 33 Fuljerson St., Cambridge and Matthew Harrington, 19, of 16 Ellsworth Ave., Cambridge, were arrested on Nov. 8, 1:55 a.m., on charges of disorderly conduct.

Responding to a large group on the verge of a fight at 1:55 a.m., officers reported to the Rite Aid parking lot on Highland Avenue. As soon as the cruisers arrived, a group of about 50 people began to disperse. Overhearing some of the conversation among different groups, officers deduced there had been a fight in the restaurant Sagra across the street. One man, later identified as Sheehan, allegedly bragged, “I kicked his ass.”

A witness told police that she saw a group of men assault a man walking down the street and helped identify them. Sheehan was found in Statue Park allegedly still yelling about beating someone up and was placed under arrest.

Back at the Rite Aid lot, police found two females pleading with a man, later identified as Harrington, to get in their vehicle so they could drive him home. Harrington allegedly refused and said he would walk. Officers followed Harrington as he walked around the corner and saw him get into the driver’s seat of a red Volvo. Noting that he appeared to be highly intoxicated, police promptly removed him and put him under arrest, according to the report.

[thenewleaves]
Tomorrow night there's a comedy showcase at Tommy's Comedy Lounge at the Charles Playhouse. A friend of mine will be performing and he's really funny so come out and support local comics! It's $8 to get in and 21+, drinks are cheap (but good), and the show starts at 8:30. It should be a great show, and if you're looking for more laughs on Friday and Saturday Frank Santorelli (Georgie the bartender from The Sopranos) will be doing stand up.

All the info, directions, etc. is available on their website at: http://tommyscomedylounge.com/ so check it out.

Does anyone know if any of the BC buildings on Comm Ave or Beacon St have restrooms that could be used by a student-aged person (but not a BC student)? My boyfriend and I run past BC all the time, and on some occasions he has to take an emergency #2. BC is really the only landmark between home and, um, home. Any other suggestions for public restrooms in the area would be very welcome. Thanks!

Four arrested for scribbling in wet cement on Somerville Avenue [Nov. 12th, 2009|12:31 am]
sville_police

Four people were arrested on Nov. 2 and charged with defacing public property.

Eleanor Hagopian, 30 and Robert Hagopian, 33, both of 282 Harvard Road, Bolton; Heather Wells, 30, of 20 Clapp St., Abington; and Jonathan Quinn, 31, 205 Ettrick St., Brockton, were nabbed on Somerville Avenue, according to a police report.

While in uniform and on his way home, Sgt. Stephen Carrabino reportedly spotted four people in front of 669 Somerville Ave., allegedly leaning over sidewalk panels that were still wet.

Somerville Avenue is currently in the process of a two-year $20 million dollar renovation, part of which is to replace all of the sidewalk panels on the street.

As a he watched, a woman, later identified as Eleanor Hagopian, allegedly used a stick to carve into the wet cement. Carrabino noted that others in the group appeared to be doing the same thing. All were laughing as they walked up Somerville Avenue toward Porter Square.

Carrabino drove by the wet panels and reportedly found deep gouges in the cement. Three panels were defaced, each of which reportedly cost the city approximately $500 to install. One was inscribed, “Ellie was here.” Scribbles over the other two read “I Eat Bags,” “Tea Bag” and “Blow Me.”

Carrabino called for back up and stopped leaving group. He asked one of them, later identified as Jonathan Quinn, for his ID but the man reportedly refused and asked the officer why. Carrabino explained he wanted to get their information, assess the damage to the sidewalk panels and issue a criminal complaint, if warranted. He told them they were being stopped for damaging city property.

Quinn started to produce his identification along with the two women, but the other man, later identified as Robert Hagopian, allegedly flatly refused.

When other officers arrived, Quinn still wouldn’t give his ID and tried to back away. All four were placed under arrest, according to the report.

What would bring you back to the EK List? [Nov. 11th, 2009|07:12 pm]

liamstliam
I bet there are folks here who do not remember the Rialto (rec.org.sca) and even fewer when it was a very useful discussion community.

A number of problems -- and changes in use of the Internet, has pretty much left it a shell of its former self.

Then there's the EK List.

Criticism has been getting more and more strenuous over postings there. Even I, who needs to know everything, got out a couple of months ago.

But when there are things happening that are as nasty as have happened over the last week or so, driving the king to make a proclamation and more and more people to leave the list, it's hard to ignore it.

A number of us, by invitation, have been batting around ideas about what would need to happen to make it a vibrant, useful part of the East Kingdom again, rather than a place new folks are warned about and hard feelings sprout.

I have lots of ideas. I always do.

But what are your ideas?

If you were the tsar or tsarina (czar or czarina?) of the EK List and had total power to make any changes, what would you do?

Thursday evening: Busy in the kitchen . . . . [Nov. 11th, 2009|07:07 pm]

1. So apparently something I said or did has made me one of "You people." I don't ever remember being one of "You people" before.

2. Signal-boost: My friend [info]valr has three helms for sale, and he also does wicked cool woodworking.

3. If you know Duchess Mary Grace from Gleann Abhainn, Queen Brenwen asks that you send a note to queen@eastkingdom.org and let her know that. No, nothing is wrong.

4. Big cooking day. Brownies, pumpkin bread (with applesauce instead of oil, chicken-fried steak and chicken-fried pork (yes, I see the juxtaposition), and I also heated up some ravioli. Nom!

5. I find LJ to be fascinating sometimes in terms of what draws a lot of posts. There are certain days, like Veterans Day, that draw a lot of heartfelt postings. There are other days like that, too. Deaths, especially science fiction folks, beloved actors/actresses, politicians and others get a lot of posts. It is interesting to see who gets more posts than others. My LJ friends are also intensely interested in the political, even on the many groups I am on. As I am thinking about this, it seems as though I am seeing fewer and fewer memes here. Are people doing them on facebook instead?

6. From www.ktnv.com:

I do very much agree with this judge.

Despite objections from a number of parents, two controversial high school plays will go on.

Several parents of students at Green Valley High School took their objections to the plays "Laramie Project" and "Rent" all the way to the court system.

Tuesday, a judge ruled.

When Green Valley senior, Meagan Smith, is finished performing in the "Laramie Project" this weekend, she'll exit stage left, with the feeling she was in the right.

"I don't really know if it [the controversy] was necessary, but I'm a firm believer in expressing your opinion," says Megan.

"There are not grounds upon which I could grant injunctive relief in favor of the plaintiffs," says District Judge, David Wall.

Wall ruled the "Laramie Project," and also the play "Rent" will go on as scheduled.

Some parents had filed an injunction, trying to stop the performances because they have homosexual characters, some of whom have AIDS, and center around the theme of tolerance.

But Judge Wall ruled that it's a matter of choice.

"There's no showing of any mandatory participation by any student," says Wall.

7. I lost the photo for No. 7 somehow.

Man tries to stab victims with metal pliers in Somerville [Nov. 11th, 2009|10:35 pm]
sville_police

Police made two arrests after one man allegedly tried to stab a couple of people using large metal pliers on Nov. 5. Jeremy Correia, 19, of 33 Governors Ave., Medford, was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, disorderly conduct and threat to commit a crime. Joseph Diaz, 22, of 37 Jaques St., was charged with disorderly conduct, according to a police report.

Responding to an assault at 220 Broadway at 12:54 a.m., police met an Everett man who said he was followed by a group he had gotten into a fight with earlier on Jaques Street. As he entered the Dunkin Donuts, the victim alleged that one of the men wearing a red sweatshirt came up to him holding a large metal object in his hands, according to the report. The suspect allegedly threatened to stab him and lunged towards him. The victim said he jumped back and a woman who tried to intervene got struck in the face. The defendant reportedly ran out of the parking lot and dropped the object he was holding.

Police searched the area and found a pair of large metal pliers on the ground. Area patrol was given a description and the defendant was located a few blocks away.

As officers interviewed victims and witnesses at Dunkin Donuts, a man later identified as Diaz, allegedly kept interrupting, despite several warnings. Officers managed to get him back to his car but Diaz allegedly continued to be verbally disruptive, causing a scene and folks to stare until he was placed in custody.

Both victims reportedly refused medical treatment.

Wednesday afternoon: Thanks to the veterans! [Nov. 11th, 2009|04:10 pm]

liamstliam
If you ever served or if you serve now: Thank you!

1. We can haz new readerz. Every since the marnanel joule tracker went away, I have not been good at welcoming new folks.\

So, let's give a big, happy Liamverse welcome to[info]knobhby, [info]alisonpv, [info]blaisepascal and miamstem!

If anyone else has climbed aboard lately, and I missed you, please chime in.

2. I had my to-do list done by 2 p.m., so I had a nice coffee and a couple of newspapers at the Rock Hill Bake House.

Did the laundry, cleaned the kitchen, put all the food away, put books away and brought most of the recycling out to the truck.

I also went grocery shopping, put all that stuff away, am making brownies and cleaned the toilet.

3. I missed Thanksgiving Day football already. I grew up in Westerly, and we played Stonington every year. You could get in excess of 5,000 or more there. One year, both teams went on to win state titles (Westerly in RI, Stonington in Conn.). ( covered the game for years for The Day and/or the Providence Journal. Because of life, I probably have not gotten to a game in five years or more. It was cool when I started seeing the sons of folks I went to high school with playing in the game. We will be in New Jersey, then Pennsylvania.

4. My nephew, my sister's oldest son, is apparently "wicked smaht" and is looking at some big-time and expensive schools. Decent kid. I hope he gets some scholarship money and gets to a great school.

5. I am actually doing some writing for work. I wrote an article on "How to get an e-mail address for your job hunt." for people who know little about the Internet. It's fast becoming a barrier for people. There are a lot of places that only take applications on the Internet.

6. My dad was a veteran. He served in London as a clerk typist. He was in a air-arid shelter when his office got bombed.

7. I do not know where my pictures of the cemetery at Normandy are. They were taken years ago.

Here's one from Jason's Travel Photography on flickr.

If you have been there, I know you have strong memories of it.

New Orleanians, or anyone that can head to NOLA between NOV. 13-15—Acting Up (in Acadiana) has created a haunting, truthful and memorable play—the performances in Play. Music. Heal. of the talented professional theatre company are astonishing and vital.

Poor customer service at Somerville's Mass Inspection lands owner in cuffs [Nov. 11th, 2009|08:00 pm]
sville_police

The proprietor of Mass Inspection wound up under arrest Nov. 5 after allegedly refusing to give a customer the printout of her failed inspection report, then making fun of her and threatening police, according to a report.

Giorgio Petruzziello, 58, of 3 Gillis Drive, North Reading, was charged with disorderly conduct and threat to commit a crime.

At 9:22 a.m., officers Robert Pasqualino and Michael Silva responded to a woman standing by her vehicle at Mass Inspection at 712 Mystic Ave., visibly upset. When she saw the officers, she began crying, saying she’s trying to complete errands while also caring for her dying husband. She told them she needs a new license plate from the Registry of Motor Vehicles because her car failed inspection due to her faded plate.

She reportedly brought her car in for inspection and wanted the proprietor, Giorgio Petruzziello, to give her a printout of her vehicle’s failed inspection report. She told police he became angry and shook his fist in her face, yelling that he doesn’t have to give her anything and chased her out of the establishment, according to the report. She called the police, she said, because she felt afraid of his irrational and aggressive behavior.

Police noted that the entire time she was speaking with them, Petruzziello was pointing and laughing. Officer Silva went into the store to speak with Petruzziello. When asked for his identification, Petruzziello was taken aback and would not give it to him until the officer explained that it is basic police procedure to identify all parties. He allegedly told officers that he was upset because the customer told him the Registry of Motor Vehicles requires a printout of the failed inspection report.

Silva tried several times to try to speak to Petruzziello, who allegedly kept interrupting, laughing, shaking his head, turning his back and refusing to listen. Silva finally got the woman’s inspection report and told Petruzziello he would be contacting the Somerville Police Traffic Division regarding this incident. Silva gave the woman the printout and advised her of her rights. As they spoke, Petruzziello allegedly began pointing at her and laughing again.

The officers tried to ignore him but that reportedly annoyed him even more. Petruzziello allegedly stormed out of the building, yelling that he wanted Silva’s name, badge number and information. Then he allegedly started to threaten the officer. “You think you’re gonna file a report? You wait until you see the report I’m gonna file against you. Wait until you see who I know,” Petruzziello said, according to the report. “I’m gonna get you. You don’t know who I know. I’m gonna get you! I’m gonna get you! I’m gonna get you!”

As he yelled at the cops, traffic reportedly stopped on Mystic Avenue with people lowering their vehicle windows to better hear the alleged threats. Petruzziello was placed into custody and taken to the Somerville Police Station.

Somerville billboard dummy not suicidal man [Nov. 11th, 2009|06:46 pm]
sville_police

After several calls from the public, the MBTA on Tuesday ordered an oil company to remove a mannequin on a billboard along I-93 that reportedly looked like a person about to jump.

“We received complaints about it, and we agreed it should be removed to avoid unnecessary confusion,” MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said. “We didn’t want it to be a distraction for motorists.”

Pesaturo said the MBTA received several calls from drivers who thought the dummy on a Clickfil billboard near the Boston-Somerville line was a real person.

Old School this Friday!

First, this Friday is Old School night at PLAGUE!
DJs Rev. Benjamin Powers, Scavenger, Doomsday Jones spin the classics!

---

Rocky Horror Live!

Then on Saturday, join us for a live stage performance of Rocky Horror at the Portland Players!
Ths is an unofficial event so you're on your own to get tickets. Just thought it would be fun to get a crew together!
Show time is 8pm and the box office is open 4-6pm M-F. There will probably be tickets at the door as well.
For more info about the show: http://www.portlandplayers.org

WANTED: Volunteers to host theme nights!

Our dear friends Joie and Roxy have done a kickass job with theme nights for the past 2 years or so but with tougher schedules and out-side life issues, they'd like to cut back to doing a theme once a quarter.
So it seems like a great opportunity to bring in some fresh ideas and hands! If you or your crew of friends would like to run some theme nights, let Amy know!

How does it work?

- You will be responsible for running 4 theme nights a year. The dates may move around due to some long standing parties (Men Without Pants, etc.) but plan on one a quarter. Usually the 3rd Friday of the month is a theme night.
- You will be responsible for choosing a theme, buying and decorating the club, offering any contest prizes, bringing in movies you would like to show, arranging for performers, and whatever else would make it a fun night!
- You will be remimbursed for expenses up to a limit ($20-$30).
- You may recommend a DJ that would work well for that particular theme. (Amy has final say due to scheduling.)
- You should have your idea formulated about a month ahead so that an online flyer can be made and Amy can make arrangements. BONUS if you can make your own flyer OR provide an image for one. DJ Pet has been comissioned to make flyers so don't sweat it if you can't come up with one.

Questions? Interested? Please ping amy at gothic maine dot com.

Remaining November Schedule:

11/13 - Old School - DJs Rev. Benjamin Powers, Scavenger, Doomsday Jones
11/20 - ZNUH, Neith, 8-Bit, Chasm

Cheap Eats: Daily Grill [Nov. 11th, 2009|11:15 am]
bostonist
Daily Grill Side Kicks.JPG

A restaurant called Daily Grill sounds nothing if a little generic. Luckily, their food is anything but. While the Daily Grill is a popular chain on the West Coast, it's rather new to the East, and the Daily Grill in the Prudential Center is their only New England outpost.

The best deal at the Daily Grill is their Social Hour menu, offered weekdays 4-7pm, Saturday 12-5pm, and all day Sunday. The page-long menu features small plates for only $2.95 (a hot dog, hummus plate, beef sliders, meatloaf sliders, a chicken quesadilla, fried calamari, and mac and cheese) and $3.95 (spinach artichoke dip, crab cake sliders, tuna sashimi, and chicken pot pie). Order a drink and you get your first plate free. Bostonist enjoyed the calamari, some of the most tender we've had, and the sliders, which could be paired with another dish to make a full meal. The chicken pot pie, though, was the real standout, and probably the best deal. For only $4, you get a big bowl heaped with chicken, carrots, peas, onions, and mushrooms in a cream sauce and topped with flaky puff pastry, a perfect antidote for the cold days that are sure to come.

If you're willing to spend a little more money but still want a good deal, try the Daily Grill's Supper Menu. For $28, you get a choice of any salad on the menu, one of five main courses (such as filet mignon with a bleu cheese crust, ala cart at $25), and your choice of a dessert or a glass of wine. That's basically three courses for the price of one - not a bad deal in our books.

Daily Grill is located at 111 Huntington Avenue, at street level below the Prudential mall. They are open Monday-Thursday, 11:30am-10pm, Friday and Saturday, 11am-11pm, and Sunday 11am-10pm.

Sports Redux: A Winning Streak! [Nov. 11th, 2009|10:42 am]
bostonist

Have the Bruins turned the proverbial corner?

After a solid month of alternating ups and downs, followed by a couple of weeks of unqualified downs, the B's finally notched their first honest-to-goodness winning streak of the season, beating the staggering Penguins 3-0 last night at the Garden. Tim Thomas got his second shutout of the season, and the B's held superkid Sidney Crosby to just two shots to earn the win. " It was a lot easier to focus on him, with a lot of the other guys out of their lineup," said Coach Julien, who knows from having a lot of guys out of the lineup.

The game was scoreless until the refs decided that Matt Hunwick's second period goal was, in fact, a goal. That stood until Daniel Paille gave them a 2-0 lead early in the third, and Patrice Bergeron put in an empty-netter to seal the game. It's the second straight time the defending champs were shut out, and the B's are very happy they caught them at the right time. Sayeth Julien:"If you want to be part of those elite teams, you’ve got to be able to compete with them. We did a good job tonight." They'll go for three in a row (!) tomorrow against the Panthers.

The Patriots continue to prepare for this weekend's epic showdown with Indianapolis, and the Globe reports that much of the preparation is alread prepared, since the Colts are so consistent. "We’re not going to go in here and install a new defense in the next couple of days and think that would be a good way to defend one of the best offensive teams, not only this year, but really in the last decade," says Coach Belichick, which surprises us, because we know how Bill likes to spring wacky surprises on his charges.

Teams and agents continue to circle around one another at baseball's winter meetings. We still keep hearing the names Matt Holliday, Roy Halladay, and Adrian Gonzalez as possible new additions to the Red Sox, but they'd like to see what the deal is with Jason Bay first. We're also still waiting to see if Jason Varitek will come back in a diminished role, and frankly the idea of him plugging away for a year or two with the Padres or somebody like that makes us pretty sad. Let's make it happen, guys.

New Dinosaur Species Discovered in South Africa
A newly discovered dinosaur species that roamed the Earth about 200 million years ago may help explain how the creatures evolved into the largest animals on land, scientists in South Africa said Wednesday. The Aardonyx celestae was a 23-foot- (7-meter-) long small-headed herbivore with a huge barrel of a chest, and the scientists told reporters it could prove to be a missing evolutionary link. This is a species "that no one has seen before and one that has a very significant position in the family tree of dinosaurs," said Australian paleontologist Adam Yates.

World Bank Warns That Unemployment Threatens US Economy
Stubbornly high joblessness threatens to trigger loan defaults and drag on consumption next year, hobbling a U.S. economy struggling to rebound from recession, World Bank President Robert Zoellick said Wednesday. "You're going to have problems with delinquencies of credit card loans, consumer loans, people won't be able to pay their mortgages," Zoellick told reporters in Singapore. "Some banks are going to continue to be troubled by bad loans."

Via [info]andrewducker: Comparison of US vs. UK healthcare
Well, let's compare the UK and US using OECD data (UK and USA):

- The UK has 2.5 physicians per 1000 people, 10 nurses per 1000, 2.6 acute care beds per 1000, a life of expectancy of 79.1 years, and an infant mortality rate of 4.8 per 1000.
- The US has 2.4 physicians per 1000, 10.6 nurses per 1000, 2.7 acute beds per 1000,life expectancy was 78.1 years, and an infant mortality rate of 6.7 per 1000.

Most people would say that the UK was marginally better than the US overall with the exception of infant mortality where it was considerably better. Why? Because infant mortality is heavily correlated with poverty and an unequal healthcare system- like the US has.

BUT the big difference? There was one stat that I left out. That is the cost of healthcare. For a healthcare system that is comparable but worse in significant ways, the US has to spend a whopping 16% of its GDP. We pay 8.4% of GDP.

Democrat's Quiet Changes Pile Up
While President Barack Obama still faces stiff headwinds on a range of major legislation on his agenda, he has been signing into law a slew of smaller initiatives that had gathered dust on the Democratic wish list for years. Many of the bills had been blocked by Republicans who considered the measures unnecessary expansions of government or too costly. But facing Democratic majorities in Congress, conservatives are picking their battles and in many cases letting the legislation roll through.

Whoa there: Here's a psyche study that shows that the Pain of Torture Makes Innocent Seem Guilty
Participants in the study met a woman suspected of cheating to win money. The woman was then "tortured" by having her hand immersed in ice water while study participants listened to the session over an intercom. She never confessed to anything, but the more she suffered during the torture, the guiltier she was perceived to be.

In the future, women are predicted to start their periods earlier, and be heavier and shorter.

Anyone Looking for a Roommate? [Nov. 11th, 2009|10:33 am]

[how_low_am_i]
Hello!
I work in Easton, Ma and am looking to move to the city, preferably Somerville since it is close to 93.

I am 23, female, Mass born and raised in Ma, went to college in Worcester.

I am looking to move into a building with people that are social, fun and respectful of space. Right now, I am living in Easton, alone and bored. There is nothing to do here and no young people.

I can sometimes be someone that keeps to myself but I am pretty adventurous and love cities. I lived out of a bag in NYC this summer and couchsurfed so needless to say I am not afraid of the unknown.

Please get in touch if interested!

ACCLAIMED INDIE CRAFT DOCUMENTARY "HANDMADE NATION" TO HAVE FREE ENCORE PRESENTATION AT THE BIG TOP ART GALLERY WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH, 2009

To celebrate the DVD release of the indie craft documentary Handmade Nation by Faythe Levine, which chronicles the rise of DIY and the new wave of art, craft and design, the New Orleans Craft Mafia and the Big Top Art Gallery are teaming up for a FREE encore presentation of the film, Wednesday November 18th, 2009.

The film will screen at 8 p.m. sharp at the Big Top’s multi-purpose 1638 Clio Street location. Before and after the screening, beginning at 6 p.m., and running til 10 p.m., the New Orleans Craft Mafia’s members will showcase their handmade and recycled wares for your early holiday shopping pleasure. The Handmade Nation DVD will be available for purchase from NOCM member Miss Malaprop at the event. (It is also available online at http://www.buyolympia.com/handmade.)

Starting in 2006, Levine traveled to 15 cities, logged over 19,000 miles and interviewed more than 80 individuals who are part of a tightly knit crafting community which exists both online through websites, blogs and online stores as well as within local communities around the world in the form of craft fairs, independent boutiques, modern day knitting circles and networking groups like the Craft Mafia. These individuals merge traditional handcrafting techniques with a modern DIY (do it yourself) ethos, combining historical crafting techniques and artisan skills with 21st century aesthetics, punk, politics, feminism and art. Fueled by the common thread of creating, the film explores a burgeoning art community that is based on creativity, determination, and networking.

The New Orleans Craft Mafia and Delgado Community College’s Irma Thomas W.I.S.E. Women Center premiered Handmade Nation to a standing-room-only crowd at Delgado’s Student Life Center in September, with filmmaker Faythe Levine in attendance. The overwhelming success of that event prompted the group to offer a second free screening for the New Orleans community, timed with the film’s DVD release.

Lots And Lots….. [Nov. 11th, 2009|09:58 am]

[The Doctor is: | crushed]

First off Happy Veteran's Day. Thank you to those who have served and/or continue to serve their country. You perform a great service and you deserve to be recognized for it.

Rob phoned the other day. He's doing well and still waiting for word about when he'll return home. He says he's been moved to a new base, but he's still "safe" and that the base he's on now is the base he'll be flown home from. Lode, the dog, did lose his tail, but he's alive and well. Rob was also waiting to hear if Lode will be honorably discharged from service and placed into his care. As soon as I know, I'll let everyone else know. I told him the date that [info]feather_brain70 and I planned to fly out and he said that sounded just fine, but that there is a possibility we may have to change our flights. So long story short, we're all still waiting.

[info]feather_brain70 and I saw Grammy on Sunday. We can't see her during the week anymore since she's sound asleep by 5:30p and I just can't get to the nursing home before 6p at the earliest. She's not doing well at all. She's now too weak to use her walker, so she's in a wheel chair. She doesn't much like it and is very depressed. I can't say I blame her. Her roommate has been taking the stuffed animals I purchase for her and putting them on her bed. I feel bad for the woman since her family almost never visits and never sends her anything. They're all crazy on that floor and can't remember anything for more than 10 seconds, so it's not that big of a deal. I just take them back when she's out of the room and return them to Grammy's closet.

Work and the new position continue to be very trying. Every time I think things are going to be okay and we've worked out all the issues, new issues pop up or are escalated to a point that they don't need to be. *sigh* I plan to continue to put up a good fight since I do really like it here, but I did promise myself that if in a year's time I'm miserable that I will look for a new job. I have every intention of keeping that promise.

With all of that said, I'm looking forward to Ghost Hunters and Destination Truth tonight. My little escapes from reality.

travel... [Nov. 11th, 2009|05:59 am]

developer
I am now 72 hours from tasting Dunkin Donuts.
Oh sweet sweet iced coffee and breakfast sandwich.

This weekend should be an interesting experiment. Since I've already blown most of my vacation time over the summer (and then some, some of those days became unpaid) I am now trying to build something back up. I'm flying in for a mere 38 hours and trying to see some friends and my family in that time. And eat Dunkin Donuts!

Originally I assumed that would be fine for the holidays -- I could just spent Thanksgiving, Xmas, and New Years here, but increasingly I am thinking that maybe I'd rather like to spend Xmas in Boston. It will be my niece's first Christmas and I'm just not sure if I'd rather be home.

Hard call.

Quite despondent. My "alt" tags work fine on my system, but don't seem to do their happy pop-up magic on LJ. Not about to take the time to figure out why.

Also, a couple of folks are using Twittinesis instead of LoudTwitter. Is it working OK?

Holliday shopping done early [Nov. 11th, 2009|05:00 am]
globeredsox
Multiple reports have it that the Red Sox made a four-year, $60 million offer to left fielder Jason Bay, though general manager Theo Epstein has not confirmed that. But if the Sox don’t retain Bay, the main power-hitting outfielder available is Matt Holliday, who is represented by Scott Boras.
