A Few Ural Videos [Nov. 28th, 2009|02:25 pm]

driftingfocus

The sound a Ural engine makes is often compared to “a sewing machine missing a few parts”.  I tend to agree, but here, you can decide for yourself:

An amusing video in German about the superiority of a Ural sidecar rig over a Harley sidecar rig:

Who needs a snowmobile if you have a Ural?

The Ural factory display team doing donuts on wet pavement:

The display team showing how the bike can be driven from the sidecar and the sidecar wheel can be changed while driving (2 videos):

Urals in Siberia. At the 3min mark, you can see them drive through over a foot of water:

Urals have a reputation for being easy to tip over on righthand turns (due to the fact that the sidecar can’t turn and is much lighter than the bike), but this video proves that you can also tip them over on lefthand turns!

Murderous moose a suspect in Swedish death

Swedish police say they've cleared a man who was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife after deciding the culprit was most likely a moose.

Police spokesman Ulf Karlsson says "the improbable has become probable" in the puzzling death last year of 63-year old Agneta Westlund. She was found dead after an evening stroll in the forest.

According to news reports, the victim's husband Ingemar Westlund, was jailed for 10 days. The case against him was dropped in January.

Karlsson declined to give details of the case Saturday, saying a news conference would be held Tuesday.

The tabloid Expressen says hairs and saliva from a moose — aka a European elk — were found on the victim's clothes. Police would not immediately confirm that.

DAILY INCIDENTS FOR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2009 [Nov. 28th, 2009|04:09 pm]
bpdnews

LESS THAN NEIGHBORLY BEHAVIOR

At about 9:25pm, on Friday, November 27, 2009, officers from Area D-4 (South End) responded to a radio call for an assault & battery in progress in the area of 27 Braddock Park. On arrival, officers spoke to the victim who stated, upon returning home, he observed an intruder (his neighbor) inside his apartment. According to the victim, it appeared that the neighbor had managed to gain access to his apartment by going through the basement. The victim further states that it appeared that the neighbor had gone through some of his personal belongings. When confronted or discovered, the victim says that his neighbor pushed him to the ground and stated, “Where’s the rent?”

Officers arrested Ron Lake, 43, of Boston and charged him with Breaking & Entering (Night time) and Assault & Battery.

OVER THE LIMIT – UNDER ARREST

At about 10:01pm, on Friday, November 27, 2009, officers from Area E-13 (Jamaica Plain) responded to a radio call for a motor vehicle accident in the area of Seaver Street and Walnut Avenue in Roxbury. On arrival, officers observed what appeared to be a minor fender bender. However, upon speaking to the operators, it became apparent that one of the operators (herein referred to as suspect) looked to be under the influence of alcohol. Upon speaking to the suspect, officers noted that the suspect had slurred speech and an odor of alcohol emanating from his person. When asked if he’d be willing to consent to a field sobriety test, the suspect was unable to provide a coherent answer.

Officers arrested Dave Birdie, 51, of Boston and charged him with Operating Under the Influence (Alcohol).

Sports Redux: Streaks Snapped [Nov. 28th, 2009|10:04 am]
bostonist

That thing about the Celtics and struggling on Friday nights. Well, nevermind. After three consecutive Friday night home losses, the Celtics beat the Toronto Raptors 116-103 thanks to outstanding shooting and a 33-17 surge in the third quarter after trailing at the half.

Mike Gorman said last night's game was the 4th best shooting game by the Celtics in 10 years. Mr. Gorman probably has his statistical data in order so Bostonist can't challenge him. However, the game stats do look good with the C's going 48-77 (.623) from the field against Toronto.

The Celtics won their third in a row as Ray Allen scored 20 points and Paul Pierce and Kendrick Perkins each added 18 points. Rajon Rondo finished with 12 points and 11 assists. Rasheed Wallace came offthe bench to score 15 points with three three-pointers.

Chris Bosh and Hedo Turkoglu each scored 20 points for Toronto.

Friday presented Boston with a Garden doubleheader. While the Celtics sent everyone home happy, the Boston Bruins probably aren't happy with Friday's 2-1 shootout loss to the Devils that snapped a four-game winning streak. But, if you listen to Peter Chiarelli, the Bruins are relieved that power forward Milan Lucic will miss just one month with a high-ankle sprain. PC said "When I saw the injury happen...I certainly expected worse." Lucic's return from his previous injury coincided with the B's resurgence.

Blake Wheeler scored in regulation and in the shootout for the Bruins against Martin Brodeur, who set another NHL record yesterday. New Jersey's goalie became the NHL's all-time minutes leader. Congratulations from Bostonist. Jamie Langenbrunner and Zach Parise beat Tuukka Rask in the shootout.

Apparently, there's a high-profile NFL game Monday involving the Patriots. According to the Globe, it's a "statement game" for the Patriots as well as the New Orleans Saints. Chris Gaspar says the Patriots don't have a "season-defining victory," and the Saints, despite a 10-0 record, aren't considered a great team.

Set Iron to "Salvation": Methuen Woman Sees Jesus On Iron [Nov. 27th, 2009|09:00 pm]
bostonist

608px-Electric_iron_lie.jpg
Image from Wikimedia Commons
Jesus doesn't just weep, he steams: a Methuen woman has found a burn resembling Jesus on her iron. Mary Jo Coady feels "spiritually uplifted" by the savior-esque image burned into the bottom of her ironing device; she confirmed the resemblance of Jesus by checking with friends on Facebook, which has been officially been recognized by science as a reliable source. We're gonna go with the iron image looking a little more Mona Lisa than Son of God, but we nevertheless commend Coady for not planning a cross-country RV trip to share the ironed image with others. In a post-Thanksgiving food coma this morning (er, afternoon), Bostonist and friends had the (somewhat dubious) pleasure of watching eccentric escape artist Jonathan Goodwin be burned by a falling iron during an attempt to escape from bedpost constraints (it was an awkward setup). Apparently Jesus was "on his side" (literally)?

[The Doctor is: | cranky]

Why do people always tell me what I'm getting for Xmas? Can't I get a surprise too?

So far, I know:
1 pair Tony Lomo boots (loma, lomo, something)
2 Fredericks bras approaching my size
1 Dave Beazley shirt

This doesn't even count the ticket to see David Cassidy with William. It's William's gift anyway, I'm just tagging along.

Had a few people wander into the shop today, most after free coffee, clean bathrooms, and shoplifting. Gotta love working on Black Friday. Not much point in it unless you are retail.

Heading south tomorrow to work on one of Matt's guitars before he heads off to his show tomorrow night. Should just be a saddle adjustment and general cleaning from what I can surmise.

My favourite radio station out of Cleveland Ohio (WNCX) is playing half albums tonight, of course first one is DSotM. Rather hope they have some Michael Stanley on later, been in the mood to hear his stuff or any of the old locals. Local music here in NY just sounds different.

'Ghost' traps, long lost, keep catching lobsters
Beneath the cold ocean waters off the coast of Maine, the nation's lobster breadbasket, lie hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of old wire lobster "ghost traps." Lost over the years to storms, boats — even the knives of fishermen who've cut them from their buoys to settle scores — many of the traps continue catching lobsters. Marine biologists say lost and abandoned lobster, crab and other fish traps plague coastal waters around the globe, putting pressure on a number of already-stressed fish populations. In U.S. waters alone, millions of dollars' worth of marketable seafood is lost each year.

Bizarre calf mutilations found on Colorado ranch

A creepy string of calf mutilations in southern Colorado has a rancher and sheriff's officials mystified.

Four calves were found dead in a pasture just north of the New Mexico state line in recent weeks. The dead calves had their skins peeled back and organs cleared from the rib cage. One calf had its tongue removed.

But rancher Manuel Sanchez has found no signs of human attackers, such as footprints or ATV tracks. And there are no signs of an animal attack by a coyote or mountain lion. Usually predators leave pools of blood or drag marks from carrying away the livestock.

Two officers from the Costilla County Sheriff's Office have investigated the mutilations but say they don't know what's killing the calves.

"There's nothing really to go by," said Sanchez, who's ranched for nearly 50 years. "I can't figure it out."

A spokesman for the sheriff's office told The Pueblo Chieftain that investigators doubt a person butchered the calves because there is no blood at the scene.

"I've butchered a cow before and I know what kind of a mess it leaves," Sgt. James Chavez said.

Some in the area believe the mutilations are the work of aliens. An area UFO chaser, Chuck Zukowski of Colorado Springs, has been to the Costilla County pasture to investigate.

He told the paper there have been other unexplained calf mutilations in the area, including three in March. One of the other calves, found dead on a ranch near Trinidad, had its ears removed, Zukowski said.

"We're trying as much as we can to find a pattern," said Zukowski, who runs a UFO Web site called ufonut.com.

Sanchez said he has sold off his 32 remaining calves out of fear more would be mutilated. He hasn't decided how he'll manage the remaining 40 animals in his herd.

"It's a big loss for a small rancher," he said.

They no longer do this, and I wonder why not; I think it would be a blast to go to that during the day before Thanksgiving dinner. The 30th anniversary edition of the song was played at the event I attended yesterday, and it was actually quite a lot of fun to listen to it along with folks who had never heard it before. Who knows, maybe they will bring it back...

This is the epitomy of suck. I am sick, have been since Wednesday night. Chills, sinus headache, cannot sleep for more than 30-45 minutes. Cannot sleep now at all. (No fever!). Should at at a tea house with A. and her parents and Gramma. Instead, I am here too sick to watch college football or browse the web much. To top it off, I have not had a drink in a week. Otherwise I might understand.

I did rally enough to eat Wednesday night and Thursday late afternoon.

[mel_redcap]
[The Doctor is: | infuriated]

To the absolute MORON who got on the bus yesterday...

Oh dear. Did I hurt your widdle feelings when I asked you (with polite words but not very polite tone) to get back off the bus and actually put out the half-burned cigarette you'd tossed on the ground? Did you feel embarrassed because somebody actually had the gall to call you on that? Aww. Wuddums.

Let me just point out a few things here.

1. This is AUSTRALIA.
2. It is SUMMER.
3. The landscape around here consists of dry grassland (flammable), eucalyptus forest (extremely flammable), and pine plantations (HOLY CRAP IT WILL BURRRRRNNNNNNN!!!!!).
4. The above three points mean that we have MASSIVE fire danger. Yes, it's been raining lately - more than usual, in fact - but we still are technically in drought, we still have a huge water shortage, and all the rain has been doing is temporarily damping things down. When/where you dropped that cigarette, things were bone dry.
5. Did you miss all the radio/TV/newspaper ads that have been nagging people to not drop cigarette butts out their car windows etc?
6. Did you miss the LARGE FIRE with EVACUATIONS in a nearby suburb less than a week ago?!

And finally,

7. When you got back on the bus and snottily informed me "It was on the dirt, not the grass, love", for one thing you were lying - and for another, "love"?! Piss off.

Lest anyone think I was overreacting... well, before 2003 I would have thought I was overreacting. In 2003, however, Canberra found out that we are not immune to bushfires; we'd just been incredibly lucky for something like 50 years. Every year there would be fires around Sydney, fires in Victoria, fires in Tasmania, you name it but Canberra did not get fires at all. Then in 2003 about three-quarters of the Australian Capital Territory burned, five HUNDRED houses were destroyed, and several people died. Have a look at the animated map on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_Canberra_bushfires - it's freaking scary. I nearly lost my house, my best friends got forcibly evacuated twice, and Da Handsome Husband's garden and house were temporarily taken over by a giant flock of exhausted birds fleeing the fires.

That was nearly seven years ago. We haven't had a major fire since. That's about the right amount of time for a good fuel load to build back up.

So yeah... be thankful I didn't call the police to report you for littering and nearly causing a fire. ASSHAT.

LJ Idol - Thanksgiving [Nov. 26th, 2009|11:25 am]

"The Pilgrims" arrived in North America in December of 1620. What they found in the area they landed was abandoned Indian villages, some with unburied skeletons of the dead lying among the weeds --due to diseases introduced by earlier settlers,-- and a very hostile reception from those Indians still alive. It would seem the last European to come by (one of John Smith's lieutenants, Thomas Hunt) had decided it would be a jolly undertaking to capture some Indians to sell into slavery in Europe, and had gratuitously killed a number of others.
Thomas Hunt had intended to sell the Indians for £20 a piece in Spain, but apparently some friars in Europe managed to interdict this plan, and one of the indians, known as Squanto, was able to make his way back to North America, and ended up at the Pilgrim's Plymouth Colony as a translater.

In 1621 the Pilgrims celebrated what is regarded as "the first thanksgiving" in North America (there had already been a long tradition both in the New World and Europe for thanks giving feasts though). They somehow convinced some local Indians to attend.

In 1622 Indians were again invited to a feast*. Their share of the liquor was poisoned and 200 Indians died. A further fifty were finished off by hand.
Then pumpkin pie was probably eaten, though I doubt they had whipped cream.**

* Admittedly this occurred in Jamestown, some 600 miles South.

** Yeah I looked up the history of whipped cream, sounds like it would need to be colder than they could probably make it in order to whip properly

I don't usually attend Thanksgiving wearing arms and armour, but then again, I didn't just barely decide not to kill the guests THIS year

Thankyou for tuning in to another Emo-Snal Classic Historical Downer! ;D
Notwithstanding, I am looking forward to devouring some turkey/stuffing/pumpkin pie until I go into a food coma.

And in other news, tomorrow I fly up to Portland for the weekend, check into the tallship Lady Washington on Sunday, and Monday set sail! Will be sailing for at least two weeks. Internet access may be spotty.

Drinking in Boston: Pairing Beer [Nov. 26th, 2009|02:00 pm]
bostonist

FishandChips.jpg Tired of trying to guess which wine goes with which dish? Afraid you’re not going to impress the guests? This year really impress them by pairing the right beer with the right dish. Or maybe the right dish with the beer, depending on your priorities.

Daria Labinsky and Stan Hieronymus of BeerTravelers.com maintain that you must strive for balance in the pairing. First decide what style beer you would like to try and then determine your particular beer’s taste characteristics. Labinsky and Hieronymus remind the chef and imbiber that “the keywords to keep mind are ‘cut,’ ‘complement,’ and ‘contrast.’” In other words, some beers can be used to reign in an especially strong or rich taste; another beer can bring out the flavors of a dish in its similarity; still another can emphasize a flavor in its difference.

An example of a good match and a good “cut” would be the pairing of an IPA with fish and chips, the hoppiness cutting the grease. Ahh, pale ale and fried food: two of our favorite things here at Bostonist. A complimentary pair might be something like a dry stout and beef stew. If you’re in the mood for dessert try contrasting a fruity lambic with dark chocolate cake.

Of course, some places will do the pairing for you. For example in New York, there exists a delightful little cupcake shop called Sweet Revenge that will, if you choose, pair your amazing cupcake with beer or wine. They know their cutting, complimenting, and contrasting.

But wow your own Thanksgiving guests with your beer pairing abilities. Exchange the goblets for the pints.

EDO'Connor has today's holiday edition of the PoTD. The sepia tones work well for this photo, and it looks like great care was taken to keep the highlights in check while still getting a good exposure with lots of detail.

Sports Redux: Every Minute Counts [Nov. 26th, 2009|08:50 am]
bostonist

Mary Schwalm / Associated Press
Sports-columnist convention requires us to list things we're thankful for on Thanksgiving. So let's go.

1.) We're thankful that the Celtics, even if they're not going to win 70 games, still can turn it on when they need to (most of the time). Despite the fact that Philly isn't as good as the C's, and was playing shorthanded, the Green still needed every one of the 48 minutes to beat the Sixers. We're thankful that the bench, which was a disgrace in the first half, played well enough to rip off a 13-2 run to start the fourth quarter (Bostonist Points to Eddie House and his 13 points, Rasheed Wallace for some key rebounds, and Marquis Daniels for some gritty play).

And we're thankful that the starters came in to seal the deal. Especially KG, who scored 19. And Rondo, who only scored 10, but two of which came on a cold-blooded dagger with nine seconds left. And especially Paul Pierce, who scored 27, hit almost every shot he took, and made Doc Rivers say, "He’s guarding guys, he’s rebounding, he’s making big shots, he’s taking charges. I mean, I don’t know what else. He can cook Thanksgiving dinner for someone and then he’ll be doing it all. He’s been terrific."

2.) We're thankful that the Bruins' road trip might have turned their season around. They took eight of eight possible points, including a shootout win last night in Minnesota. Byron Bitz scored in the first, the Wild tied it in the second. And the B's held on through a wild (no pun intended) flurry late in the game, killing a Dennis Wideman penalty with less than 2:00 in OT to force the shootout. Patrice Bergeron scored on the shootout, but Minnesota's Mikko Koivu answered by beating Tuukka Rask. Rask and Nicklas Backstrom traded some pretty sweet saves, until David Krejci beat Backstrom, and Rask saved a shot from Chuck Kobasew (yes, that Chuck Kobasew). We're not thankful that Milan Lucic got hurt again, but we're happy that Tim Thomas could be back as early as tomorrow.

3.) We're thankful that the Patriots aren't involved in any of the three dreadful Thanksgiving NFL games. Instead, America gets to watch the ho-hum Packers at the miserable Lions, then the meh Cowboys against the wretched Raiders, and then the Giants and Broncos, who are a combined 1-137 in the last four weeks. A lot of football fans will have digestive trouble this year.

4.) We're thankful that, as much digestive trouble as we've gotten watching the Steelers, Lakers and Yankees walk off with trophies in the last year, we've got four legitimately competitive teams in town (OK, OK, Revs, five). And it's not out of the question that any one of them could get those trophies back before too long. Look at the 5-11-7 Maple Leafs. Or the winless Nets or winless-except-against-the-Nets Timberwolves. Or the collection of terrible, terrible teams in the NFL (the Lions aren't even in the Top Five hopeless franchises, which should tell you something.) When you hear that Band-Aid song over the next month, and Bono belts out, "Tonight thank God it's them....instead of YOU!"...well, he's probably talking about the Nets and the Browns.

Happy Thanksgiving, everybody.
